Gun control cut crime
There was a really interesting short article in the Observer saing that research by US economists had shown that stringent controls on guns in Chicago had driven up the cost of getting hold of a weapon and the result had been a cut in violent crime. Apparently the ban on handguns over 20 years ago mean that guns and ammunition on the street are of poor quality and are hard to come by. Gun crime is less common in US cities with tighter laws. Scarcity reduces gun use in crime.
I thought what was interesting was not so much the findings, which we would be familiar with in this country, but the fact it was economists who carried out the research and the analysis of the market in this way.
And while we are on the United States, we must celebrate the moratorium on carrying out executions. The supreme court has ruled that lethal injection is cruel. I was the anti-death penalty co-ordinator at Amnesty International for five years and there is no easy way to carry out an execution.
