Jury system: a bulwark of freedom

I’m off to do my civic duty. Once again I am called to do two weeks’ jury service. I did it a few years ago and have to admit I was really impressed. I sat on one case that was completed, and obviously I can’t talk about the details, but I can say that the interesting and representative group took the whole process extremely seriously.

We found the chap not guilty of intent to supply, cannabis. Topical now of course, and I think a lesson for the Government. It is no good increasing the possible penalties for cannabis when juries won’t convict, it just wastes everyone’s time and money.

Thank goodness for the jury system, it really is a bulwark of freedom, if a little time consuming and ponderous.
