Keir Starmer lecture on the role of the modern prosecutor
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, gave a lecture for the Howard League last night discussing issues about the role of the prosecutors in dealing with young people. There were plenty of references to his defence of the Human Rights Act and consequent media attention, but I was really pleased to see that today’s Guardian has a leader in defence of Keir Starmer. Quite right too. His concern is testament to his regard for independence. Human rights play a crucial role in ensuring that he can discharge his duties in a fair and transparent way, without trampling on the rights of either possible defendants or victims so as to work towards the safer society we all want.
His talk to us was a considered review of the role of the prosecutor when dealing with young people particularly in the light of the extremely low age of criminal responsibility in this country. We had almost 200 people attend and there was a lively Q & A session at the end.
I must thank the law firm, Clifford Chance, who hosted this event in the beautiful headquarters building in Canary Wharf and provided delicious nibbles afterwards.

UBUNTU FOUNDATION I am because We are AC (Zulu language), we have 2 years experience with people inside the prison, formerly catered to low-income people, legal advice only, and little by little it was taking the approach to Women, because we are a bit forgotten, is a project that is starting, the basic objective is to provide legal assistance to inmates in the Women’s Social Rehabilitation Center (Prison), likewise boost rehabilitation programs that include psychology to their benefit so that inside and outside prison to develop activities that allow them to go ahead and form a better future, in order to prevent recidivism and clear support them.
Essentially we are constituted by our President, Mrs. Munoz, a foreman, 3 people on Finance, 4 lawyers, 3 psychologists, and the people we provide advice as to the overall project.
This is roughly what we are working and we are delighted to coincide with people committed to you.
I’ve commented to our President, Mss. Munoz of the work done and is fascinated, would love to talk personally with you, she will be traveling to Europe for the months of October, November and wondering if possible a meeting with President or with someone who can provide an interview about his work.

FUNDACION UBUNTU Yo soy porque Nosotros somos A.C (del idioma Zulú), tenemos 2 años de experiencia con las personas dentro del penal, anteriormente se atendÃan a personas de bajos recursos, asesorÃa legal solamente, y poco a poco se fue dando el enfoque hacia las Mujeres, ya que estamos un poco olvidadas, es un proyecto que va arrancando, el objetivo básicamente es brindar asesorÃa legal a personas recluidas en los Centros de Readaptación Social Femenil (Prisión) , asà mismo impulsar programas de rehabilitación que incluyen la psicologÃa para su beneficio , para que dentro y fuera de prisión puedan desarrollar actividades que les permitan salir a delante y formarse un futuro mejor, con el fin de evitar la reincidencia y claro, apoyarlas.
Básicamente estamos constituidos por nuestra presidenta Sra. Muñoz, un capataz, 3 personas de finanzas, 4 abogados, 3 psicólogas, y gente que nos esta brindando asesorÃa en cuanto al proyecto en general.
Esto es a grandes rasgos lo que estamos trabajando y nos alegra mucho poder coincidir con personas comprometidas con ustedes.
Le he comentado a nuestra presidenta la Sra. Muñoz del trabajo que realizan y esta fascinada, le encantarÃa poder charlar personalmente con ustedes, ella estará viajando a Europa por los meses de Octubre, Noviembre y queremos saber si fuera posible una reunión con su Presidente o bien con alguien que nos pueda brindar una entrevista acerca de su trabajo.
In his lecture Keir Starmer QC mentioned the importance of educating young people about the consequences of breaking the law.
