Some of today’s papers
Some of today’s papers have had a fit of over enthusiasm in attributing the prison ship story and I want to put the record straight. Last week’s seminar in Oxford was a lively and robust discussion with students and Alan Duncan stuck to his party line – whilst using flavourful language as you would expect of a charismatic politician.
The prison ship story came the next day from different sources and should not be conflated with the seminar.
The Conservative justice front bench have spent considerable effort developing thoughtful and carefully constructed policies over the last three years. We don’t agree with them all but are happy to work with them on serious ideas for dealing with overcrowding in prisons and crime reduction.

So, the Tories intend to make overcrowding in prison even worse. And you say that you are happy to work with them. Should you not now be getting out of the prison reform game as your leaning is more towards the Tory party than towards prisoners and prison reform?
I dont normally reply to personal insults, but I need to make it clear that as a charity the Howard League is non-partisan and impartial and we are happy to converse and provide information to any member of the public or anyone involved in public life.
A second point, we are not in the prison reform game. We are in the penal reform game. Our objective is not to make prisons work better; but to work for less crime, safer communities and few people in prison. Granted, some people would still be in custody, but in a completely different sort operation to what we have now. Our view is that prisons fail abysmally for staff, individuals contained in them, the public and victims.
The big question is how do we achieve such radical and important change. I dont think it is by ignoring people with influence but by trying to persuade them.
