A landmark report into the prison system has been published today (Thursday 2 July). The product of a two-year long inquiry commissioned by the Howard League for Penal Reform, the final report of the Commission on English Prisons Today takes a radical look at the purposes and limits of a penal system and how it should sit alongside other social policies.

Past Abuse Suffered by Children in Custody - A Way Forward
This report by a group of experts was commissioned, but not published, by the Youth Justice Board. Having made it available on our website, we have now moved it to our Study Centre so that it can be easily accessed by those interested in reading it. You can find out more and read the report here.
Vacancies at the Howard League
There are a number of new and exciting opportunities at the Howard League. We are recruiting a full time support officer to the director and senior management team. We are also looking for a team of internet volunteers to help us make the case for penal reform online.

Howard League's evidence to the knife crime inquiry
The House of Commons Home Affairs Committee released today (2 June) its report on knife crime which refers to the evidence given by the Howard League’s director Frances Crook and the research carried by Nicola Marfleeet published by the Howard League. Prison violence up by almost a third
Figures obtained by the Howard League for Penal Reform have revealed that recorded acts of violence in prisons have risen by 31% in the last five years. The figures show that self-harm, assaults and fires are all on the rise – with 180,000 acts committed over 5 years.

Howard League Bursary
