National Student Conference 2013
Think beyond the bars: The dynamics of desistance
Our fourth National Student Conference, held Wednesday 20 November 2013 was a briliiant day of discussion and debate. Thank you to all who attended and took part. It was our biggest student conference yet with over 140 students from universities across the country in attendance.
The conference focused on the dynamics of desistance.
The prison system is not working. With over 83,000 people currently incarcerated in England and Wales, and a reoffending rate of 61% for those sentenced to less than 12 months, it is a sad reality that people leave prison only to go on to commit more crime.
The conference looked at different approaches to breaking the cycle of re-offending. We had some brilliant speakers including several ex-offenders and the Young Advisors from U R Boss as well as representatives of projects that make a real difference to lives of people going through the criminal justice system. The students also had the chance to vote for the theme of their upcoming Day of Action campaign based on the U R Boss Young people's Manifesto.
Photos and Day of Action voting results to follow!
