Take Action 2010
The Howard League for Penal Reform is asking as many people as possible to promise to take action for less crime, safer communities and fewer people in prison.
At this moment the prison population is close to breaking point. With almost 84,000 people locked up right now 20,000 men are sharing cells that are designed for one.
Two thirds of those who go to prison are given sentences of less than a year, with the vast majority serving less than three months in custody. Prisons are violent and dangerous places and often people come out more damaged than they went in. This isn’t safe for the vulnerable individual sent to prison and isn’t safe for the community.
The Howard League wants to stop the cycle of crime where prisoners are shut up, forgotten and then released with no help to resettle back into society. We need more investment in communities to tackle the underlying causes of crime. We need your support now for less crime, safer communities and fewer people in prison.
